Some Sessions Introduce Someone New
Some families you photograph once and move on. This one we keep coming back to — and this time, there was someone new to meet.
We've spent enough afternoons on Abran and Ashton's family farm in El Rito to know the light there, the way it comes in low and gold across the field by early evening, and the particular blue of the New Holland tractor that's been the backdrop to more than one of these sessions now. This time we came for their newest addition — baby Elijah, with his mother's eyes and absolutely no interest in staying still.
A Cowboy Hat and a Front-Row Seat
Elias, the big brother, has never needed convincing to climb onto that tractor. He rides with his dad every chance he gets, and by now he has his own seat worked out — perched up on the tire, boots dangling, straw cowboy hat a size too big and exactly right anyway. He posed for exactly as long as he wanted to before pointing at something across the field and announcing, without a word wasted, that he had somewhere else to be
The Eyes Are All Ashton's
Most of Elijah's session happened on a blanket Ashton spread out in the tall grass — soft enough for two boys to roll around on, big enough that nobody minded getting close. He wore his tiny denim overalls, Carhartt patch and all, with the seriousness of someone who already understands the family uniform, gummed on a toy tire, and stared out at the field with the same pale blue eyes his mother has. One frame catches him in a cap stitched with his own initials, as if there was never any question about whether this one belonged here too.
Two Brothers, One Blanket, All That Field
The best part of the afternoon wasn't posed at all. Elias lay down next to his brother, pulled him in close, made faces until Elijah cracked up completely, delighted and open-mouthed. Under the cottonwood at the edge of the field, Ashton lifted Elijah straight up into the leaves and he laughed the kind of laugh that only happens when someone you trust is the one holding you. Abran stood by the tractor with his older son up on the tire and his arm resting easy on that enormous wheel, like a man who has done exactly this a hundred times before — because he has.

Abran and Ashton — thank you for letting us back onto your farm again, and for introducing us to Elijah. Watching Elias take his little brother under his wing, on the same land where we've photographed your family before, was exactly the kind of quiet, ordinary magic we keep coming back for.
