Three Kids, One Field, and the Brazos Cliffs Standing Watch
Some sessions ask you to plan every frame. This one asked us to keep up.
We photographed the Carrillo family on their family's farm field in Ensanada, New Mexico, with the Brazos Cliffs rising up behind them like something out of an old story. Cadie and Donald brought their three kids out into the deep green grass at the end of the day, when the light turns warm and slow and catches every blade at the edges, and let them do exactly what kids do in a field that big: run.
Brody, the oldest, found a stick almost immediately and held it up like he'd won something. Later he tucked a fistful of wildflowers into his own hair, deeply unbothered by how it looked, fully committed to the bit. Layne, right behind him, reached for the camera with a handful of flowers like she had something urgent to show us. She put her hands on her hips more than once, in the exact way of someone who has seen an adult do it and understood its power. And Sunnie, the baby, did what babies do in deep summer grass — chewed on a piece of it, got lifted overhead until she laughed, and reached for her dad's cowboy hat like she'd been planning to take it the whole session.
The family wore soft denim and chambray, blues that matched each other without trying to match the field, though somehow they did anyway. Donald's hat and belt buckle were not props. This is a family that works this land, and it showed in how natural they looked standing in it.
We didn't pose much. We didn't need to. The best frames came from staying close and quiet while Cadie knelt down to gather flowers with the kids, while Donald crouched low to show Brody something held in his hands, while all three kids wandered ahead through grass taller than their waists and the parents simply watched them go.
This is what family photography looks like in rural Northern New Mexico — less direction, more attention. Less "look at the camera," more "let's see what happens when we just let them play." The Brazos Cliffs did the rest, holding the whole scene the way mountains do, like they've watched a hundred families do exactly this before.
Cadie and Donald — thank you for trusting us with your kids on a piece of land that clearly means something to your family. Brody, Layne, and Sunnie, you three were a joy to chase through that field.
