Not Every Bride Wears White

Some couples know exactly who they are. They don't need a mood board or a trend to tell them. They just know.

Mauricette knew. Her gown was black lace over deep plum — a corset bodice hand-embroidered with dark florals, a long tulle skirt the color of an eggplant in late light, and a black veil that trailed behind her like a shadow. She wore a dark jeweled crown, a layered chain necklace, violet eyeshadow, and carried a bouquet of deep purple and white roses she looked like she had grown herself.

Nico matched her without copying her. All black, a floral-embossed purple vest, a dark rose boutonnière. Together they looked like a painting someone made from memory.

Their wedding moved across three places in Northern New Mexico — Chimayó, Santa Fe, and then the sky above it all — and every location held something worth remembering.

The Ceremony: Holy Family Parish, Chimayó

There is something about Holy Family Parish in Chimayó that quiets you when you walk in. The warm wood ceiling, the whitewashed walls, the light filtering through stained glass onto a church that has been holding this valley's celebrations and grief for generations.

Nico stood at the altar with his mother on his arm, flanked by groomsmen dressed entirely in black. He watched the door. The moment Mauricette appeared, his face changed. That look — we don't manufacture it. We just wait for it and try not to miss it.

What we didn't expect was the priest. He picked up a Nikon and photographed the moment himself. In full vestments, in the middle of the Mass, he raised the camera and took the picture. We captured him doing it — two photographers in the same frame, separated by forty years and a vocation. One of the strangest and most tender photographs we have ever made.

At the side altar, before the ceremony ended, Mauricette and Nico paused together at the statue of Our Lady of Grace. Heads bowed, standing close. That moment belonged to Chimayó.

The emerald-gowned bridesmaids filed out first, then the couple stepped into the New Mexico light, and their people lined the path with their hands raised and ribbon wands swaying. Mauricette pressed her face into the shoulder of someone she loved before they loaded into cars toward Santa Fe.

The Portraits: Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi

Downtown Santa Fe on a wedding day is its own kind of theater. The wedding party walked together through the streets — crossing Palace Avenue in their emerald and black, unhurried, Mauricette's veil catching the wind between the adobe buildings while tourists stopped and stared.

At the Cathedral Basilica, that golden sandstone facade with its arched Romanesque doorways became the backdrop for the bridal party portrait that had been building all day. Emerald lace on one side, all black on the other, and in the center — Mauricette and Nico in their dark jewel-toned world, surrounded by the warmth of the oldest cathedral in the American Southwest.

We made portraits in the garden beside the cathedral, where pink roses and yellow wildflowers were blooming so insistently they kept framing the couple whether we asked them to or not. The city noise fell away. There was laughter. There was Nico kissing Mauricette's temple while she closed her eyes. There was a moment when they leaned together under a tree and the light came through the leaves exactly right.

In those portraits, you could see what the rest of the day had been quietly building toward — two people who are completely themselves, completely together, completely at home in the strange and beautiful world they have made.

The Reception: Santa Fe Terrace

Santa Fe Terrace sits just steps from the Cathedral, which means the procession from portraits to reception required nothing more than a walk through the heart of the city. They arrived to dark green velvet tablecloths, gold candlelight, purple florals, and a detail that stopped us: the ring box was a small glass coffin, moss-lined, perfect.

The speeches were long and full of love. A grandmother bent low over the table so Mauricette could lean in close and hold her hands.

When it came time to cut the cake, Nico raised a sword over it first.

Of course he did.

By dusk, the reception had moved to the rooftop. Teal light washed the pergola, the Sangre de Cristos faded into the evening behind the city, and a friend's German Shepherd made the rounds on the rooftop with the easy confidence of someone who understood the assignment.

Mauricette and Nico — thank you for trusting us with this day. We have photographed New Mexico in all its colors, but this one was new. This one was yours.
